The Lecco branch of Lake Como is renowned, not only for its splendid panoramas but also for its typical products, made unique by the extraordinary biodiversity of the region and the commitment of local producers to preserving traditions

The Protected Geographical Indication wine “Terre Lariane”

Wine-growing for the production of the I.G.T. wine “Terre Lariane” has ancient roots around Lake Como and the Brianza hills: for centuries, these territories have produced wines both for local consumption and for the market. The two most important zones are the Brianza hills, in Montevecchia and Curone Valley Park, and Upper Lake Como.

Thanks to renewed interest, today local productions have obtained major awards, such as the “Terre Lariane” Typical Geographical Indication designation in 2008

Under cultivation are vines such as Barbera, Cabernet, Chardonnay and Riesling, from which full-bodied red and fresh white wines are obtained. Curone Park is not to be missed, where agritourism establishments and wineries offer the opportunity to taste local wines and traditional dishes, immersed in a unique landscape.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil “Lombard Lakes – Lake Como” D.O.P.

The cultivation of olives around Lake Como began with the Romans in 196 B.C., and its tradition of quality dates from the Lombard era.

Today, the municipalities of Varenna, Perledo and Bellano produce a highly-esteemed extra virgin oil, thanks to a unique microclimate that protects the plants from frosts and summer heat. The olives are harvested by hand; the pressing is carried out cold, thereby preserving the original taste and aroma, while stone and stainless steel grinders exist in perfect synergy in the processing.

The entire shore from Lecco to Colico consists of vast zones under olive cultivation: from Abbadia Lariana to Bellano, passing through Mandello del Lario, Lierna, Varenna and Perledo. It is possible to follow this itinerary by train or on foot along the Sentiero del Viandante (The Wayfarers’ Path). The Biosio oil mill in Bellano is the only one on the eastern shore of Lake Como and uses advanced technologies to ensure a high-quality product.

The D.O.P. oil of Lake Como stands out for its brilliant green colour, fruity aroma and low acidity, perfect for those who seek a nutritionally rich product with a balanced flavour; since 1998, the oil has been a “Lombard Lakes – Lake Como” Protected Designation of Origin (D.O.P) product.

Lake Como honey

Lake Como honey stands out for its unique characteristics favoured by the climate mitigated by the lake and the territory’s rich biodiversity, which offers bees a wide variety of blossoms during the growing season. Acacia or robinia, chestnut, lime, millefiori and honeydew honey are all produced here. There are also more niche products, such as the High Mountain, raspberry, rhododendron and tree of Heaven honey. Acacia honey is one of the most popular, thanks to its delicate scent and its not very persistent vanilla flavour.
