Basilica of San Nicolò
Lecco's basilica brings together art and history in the heart of the city
The Chiesa di Santa Marta (Church of Saint Martha) lies in the heart of Lecco’s historic centre. Built in the thirteenth century, it was originally dedicated to Saint Calimerius and was the seat of the Disciplinati Brotherhood. The Lecco tradition of the “michini” is owed to them: small yeast-free rolls that are handed out on 29 July on the day dedicated to Saint Martha.
The origins of the Church of Saint Martha date back to the Middle Ages and it has been restored and extended several times over the centuries, reflecting the various historical eras and a series of architectural styles.
The exterior of the Church of Saint Martha has a simple yet elegant façade; crossing the threshold, the simple nave with barrel vault of 1615 is immediately striking and creates a secluded and welcoming atmosphere. The walls are adorned with frescos and artworks that relate stories of faith and devotion. The decorations are in the baroque style and the statue of the “Madonna of the Plague” is also found here, a comfort for citizens during the epidemic of 1630, as well as a fresco of the Glory of Saint Martha in the presbytery’s vault.
