Where nature and history come together

Overlooking Lake Annone, Civate has been home to ancient civilisations for thousands of years. The earliest human settlements date back to the Copper Age, as shown by important finds at the site known as Buco della Sabbia; the area was later inhabited by the Celts, Romans and Goths, followed by the Lombards and Franks. An extensive network of hiking trails leads to the summits of Mount Cornizzolo, Mount Rai and Corno Birone, with themed routes, circular walks and paths suitable for all levels of ability. A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, Civate is also a fascinating mosaic of traditions and legends. As you explore on foot or by bicycle, you will come across ancient mule tracks and archaeological remains, discover mysterious underground springs, venture into the Valle dell’Oro Gorge and reach the spectacular Abbey of San Pietro al Monte.

Museums and cultural attractions

The Casa del Pellegrino, or Pilgrim’s House, is well worth a visit for its remarkable 15th-century frescoes. Originally created as a place of rest for the many pilgrims who made their way on foot to the Benedictine monastery, it remains a haven of peace today. Even along easy walking trails, you can encounter fascinating traces of the distant past that make Civate one of the most intriguing destinations in the Lake Como area: the archaeological remains of the Tozio Celtic Village, considered the earliest settlement from which the present-day town developed, and the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct in a dramatic rocky canyon at the entrance to the Valle dell’Oro Gorge.

Places of faith

Civate is famous for the monastic complex of San Pietro al Monte, an ancient place of power, spirituality and beauty. According to tradition, it was founded by King Desiderius after the miraculous recovery of his son Adalgiso. Rich in religious symbolism and outstanding works of art, the complex is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Lombardy. It also includes the circular Oratory of San Benedetto, where traces of the original frescoes can still be seen. Nearby, you can visit the Church of San Calocero, dedicated by the Bishop of Milan to the martyr from Albenga. In Civate’s historic centre stands the Parish Church of Santi Vito e Modesto, recorded as early as the 12th and 13th centuries as a dependency of the parish church of Oggiono.

Mountains and outdoor activities

A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, Civate forms part of the Ecomuseo del Distretto dei Monti e dei Laghi Briantei, an ecomuseum encompassing the mountains and lakes of the Brianza area. Here you can go fishing or try climbing at one of the best-known crags in the Lecco area. There is also an extensive network of trails to explore on foot or by bicycle. From Valle dell’Oro, you can hike to the Abbey of San Pietro al Monte or follow the Anello delle Casote, the “Casote Loop”, a trail where you will come across casote—traditional dry-stone shelters once used during the haymaking season. Continuing towards the summit of Corno Birone, you can also reach the top of Mount Rai. For an easier outing suitable for children, head up Mount Cornizzolo for panoramic views over the lake. And if you prefer to experience the lakeside at a slower pace, follow the Lake Annone cycling and walking path as far as the Isella peninsula.
