The walk takes place in Val Meria, above Mandello del Lario, following the course of the stream along the so-called Sentiero del Fiume (River Trail). In this cool, shaded setting, water takes centre stage: over time, it has carved out the rock, creating the Marmitte dei Giganti – deep, circular pools shaped by the force of debris swept along by the eddies – along with small gorges and smooth surfaces that lend the landscape a dynamic and striking character.
The route alternates between sections in the woods and more open stretches, accompanied by the constant sound of water and ever-changing views. Continuing uphill, you reach Alpe d’Era, where the landscape opens up to meadows and ancient mountain pastures that tell the story of the valley’s rural tradition. Here the pace slows and the view widens to a brighter setting, in stark contrast to the initial part of the route.
The route continues to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria sopra Olcio, which overlooks Lake Como from a panoramic vantage point. It is a secluded and peaceful spot, marking the highest point of the hike and offering sweeping views of the surrounding area. From here, you return along the path, bringing to a close a varied and engaging route.
This is a hike that requires a little training, ideal for those seeking an immersive experience in nature, combining water, history and landscape.
