Piona Abbey, or more precisely Piona Priory, lies on the eastern shore of Lake Como and stands at the foot of the Legnone and Legnoncino mountains on the Olgiasca peninsula, which extends into the lake and forms a typical inlet.
This ancient Cistercian monastic complex dates from the 8th century and is one of the territory’s most captivating and well preserved sites. The beauty of Piona Abbey lies in its Romanesque architecture, with its imposing bell tower and internal cloister that take visitors on a real journey back in time.
Medieval frescos, sacred works of art and a library full of ancient manuscripts can be admired inside the Abbey. The surrounding garden offers a breathtaking view of Lake Como, making the entire complex not only a place of spirituality but also an unmissable tourist attraction for whoever likes to immerse themselves in history and in the beauty of the territory around the lake.
The Abbey can easily be reached by car from Lecco on the trunk road in the direction of Colico; by train from Lecco, disembarking at Piona station; or by boat, for a truly unique experience.
