Basilica of San Nicolò
Lecco's basilica brings together art and history in the heart of the city
Leaving Monte Resegone and the statue of Alessandro Manzoni behind, beyond the road, the neo-Romanesque façade of the church of the Blessed Virgin of Victory certainly captures the attention with its colours and shapes.
The chromatic aspect that is striking for its originality was in fact created by the alternation of white Valchiavenna stone with black granite.
Entering the sanctuary, the austere and monumental appearance of the interior is stunning and conveys particular sensations.
In 1918, Cardinal Ferrari blessed the first stone of this Sanctuary and, in 1932, Cardinal Schuster consecrated the temple dedicated to Our Lady of Victory in honour of the fallen of the First World War.
Some interesting sixteenth-century artworks by Fra’ Gerolamo Codega are preserved in the church: the altarpiece depicting the Virgin of Mercy and the frescos in the second chapel on the right. The remains of officers and soldiers are preserved in the crypt.
An oddity: the only bell of the impressive bell tower tolls only once a day, at 7 p.m., in memory of the fallen.
