The sun gives us life, but it is also a hotbed of danger. Flares and other violent solar phenomena can cause magnetic storms, disrupt communications and cause blackouts. But sooner or later a ‘Carrington event’ will return, as it did in 1859, with effects that can literally bring our technological civilisation to its knees.
