Pian delle Betulle
An oasis in the mountains for the whole family
The Valsassina Cycle and Walking Path is one of the most invigorating and popular routes in the province of Lecco: a route of around 14 kilometres that allows you to discover the green heart of the valley as you cycle along the course of the Pioverna stream, surrounded by the majestic Grigne and Orobie Alps.
Easy, safe and entirely tarmacked, this cycle path is the ideal route for those wishing to experience the mountains at a leisurely and accessible pace, alternating the beauty of the natural landscape with the chance to discover local culinary traditions. Thanks to its gentle gradient and protected route, the path is perfect for all seasons, allowing you to enjoy a pleasant half-day out as a couple, with friends or with the whole family.
The classic starting point is in Pratobuscante, Barzio, at the Mountain Community headquarters, where there is ample parking. From here, the trail winds northwards through the municipalities of Pasturo, Introbio, Primaluna and Cortenova, offering unique views of the rocky cliffs overlooking the valley.
The route is almost entirely flat or gently sloping, making it suitable for children and those using pushchairs or scooters. For those who prefer a less strenuous route, we recommend setting off from Taceno to tackle the gentle climb on the way there and enjoy the descent on the way back.
There’s no shortage of reasons to stop off along the cycle route. One of the most picturesque spots is the Sprizzotolo Waterfall in Introbio, where the icy-cold water cascades down from the mountain, offering a refreshing natural retreat. For the little ones, the fun continues in Pasturo with mini-golf and the numerous play areas and kiosks dotted along the route, perfect for a relaxing break.
Valsassina is also a land of authentic flavours: as you cycle, you’ll come across the Formaggeria Carozzi, a must-visit stop to sample the famous Taleggio and other local cheeses.
The final section of the route leads to Taceno, near the ancient and renowned Tartavalle Thermal Baths, a historical testament to early 20th-century spa tourism. From here, the view stretches out towards the lower reaches of the River Pioverna, which continues its journey towards the incredible Bellano Gorge before flowing into Lake Como.
Thanks to its accessibility and the variety of facilities on offer, the Valsassina Cycle and Footpath is the ideal choice for anyone looking for things to do in Lecco and the surrounding area away from the hustle and bustle: a safe cycle ride through woodland, past grazing horses and unforgettable mountain views.
