Iron and industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Crossed by three main streams\u2014the Caldone, Gerenzone and Bione<\/strong>\u2014Lecco has deep roots in industry. The first workshops processing minerals from nearby Valsassina were established in the districts of Laorca<\/a>, Malavedo<\/a>, San Giovanni<\/a> and Caleotto<\/strong>. Harnessing the power of flowing water, forges, knitting mills and factories developed alongside the growth of the metalworking and engineering industries, giving rise to Lecco\u2019s enduring identity as a \u201ccity of iron<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. Today, most of these former industrial sites have been decommissioned and regenerated, with some transformed into cultural venues and exhibition spaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature and landscape<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Lecco, the lakefront promenade stretches from the Monument to the Fallen<\/strong> to Piazza Stoppani<\/strong>, where the iconic golden statue of San Nicol\u00f2<\/a><\/strong> appears to hover above the water.
