The gateway to Valsassina<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nestled in a broad valley between the southern Grigna<\/a><\/strong> and Mount Due Mani<\/strong>, Ballabio is the first village in Valsassina<\/strong>, forming a natural link between Lecco and its mountains. The oldest part of the village retains the distinctive atmosphere of a traditional Pre-Alpine settlement, with cobbled lanes, small shady squares, houses with external galleries and stone courtyards, fountains and old washhouses. As you wander through the streets, you will still find small shops, bakeries and delicatessens. Historically known for its artisan cheese production, Ballabio is still home to a thriving network of small, family-run businesses offering a wide range of local specialities to discover. Shaped over the centuries by the rule of the Sforza, the Medici, the Habsburgs and the French, Ballabio is also an excellent starting point for hikes and mountain excursions\u2014a perfect blend of history, traditions, local flavours and nature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Places of spirituality<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the heart of the historic village, the parish Church of the Beata Vergine Assunta<\/strong> is well worth a visit. Already in existence by the end of the 13th century, it houses a 17th-century altar, an organ probably dating to around 1700 and fine 19th-century frescoes attributed to Giovanni Tagliaferri. In the lower part of Ballabio stands the parish Church of San Lorenzo<\/strong>, built in 1923 and consecrated in 1936.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountains and outdoor activities<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From Ballabio, you can hike up the Val Grande to Piani Resinelli<\/a><\/strong>, reaching the plateau near Canalone Porta and the Corni del Nibbio, its quieter and less touristy side. Once there, enjoy panoramic walks among majestic centuries-old beech trees and broad alpine meadows covered in wildflowers. If you prefer hikes without major elevation gains or technical difficulties, you can continue along the Traversata Bassa delle Grigne<\/strong>, the lower traverse of the Grigne. More experienced hikers can choose from a number of trails leading to Rifugio Carlo Porta<\/strong>, a mountain hut, or to Bivacco Ferrario<\/strong>, an unmanned mountain shelter, on the summit of the Grignetta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Ballabio, you can also climb to the summit of Mount Due Mani along a demanding trail with some equipped sections. For an easier option, follow the shorter, gentler route to Bongio<\/strong>, find the perfect spot for a picnic lunch and then make your way back.<\/p>\n\n\n \n
