{"id":3177,"date":"2024-04-11T12:10:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T10:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/?p=3177"},"modified":"2026-07-28T10:42:51","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T08:42:51","slug":"azzone-visconti-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/azzone-visconti-bridge\/","title":{"rendered":"Azzone Visconti Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n  The <strong>Azzone Visconti Bridge<\/strong>, affectionately known by the people of Lecco as <strong>&#8220;Ponte Vecchio&#8221;<\/strong> (Old Bridge), is a landmark monument marking the exact point where Lake Como ends and the River Adda resumes its course.\n  Famous for being immortalised by Alessandro Manzoni in the opening lines of <a href=\"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/manzoni-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>The Betrothed<\/em><\/strong> (<em>I Promessi Sposi<\/em>)<\/a>, this viaduct is not merely infrastructure, but an extraordinary example of military engineering that tells seven centuries of history.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A&nbsp;Fortress&nbsp;on the Adda<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n  Built between <strong>1336 and 1338<\/strong> by order of Azzone Visconti, Lord of Milan, the bridge was created to improve strategic links between Lecco and the Duchy of Milan.\n  Originally, the structure looked very different from what we see today: it was a true <strong>fortified bridge<\/strong>, manned by a garrison and equipped with defensive towers, ravelins, and three drawbridges that ensured the safety of the town.\n  In the 17th century, anyone crossing it was required to pay a hefty toll, managed by a consortium of local nobles and the Benedictine monastery.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The&nbsp;Evolution&nbsp;of the Eleven&nbsp;Arches<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n  A fascinating aspect of the Azzone Visconti Bridge is the evolution of its shape.\n  Initially featuring only eight arches, the bridge was eventually expanded to <strong>eleven<\/strong>.\n  This modification was functional rather than aesthetic: the original structure created a &#8220;bottleneck&#8221; that the people of Como believed was responsible for the constant flooding of their city.\n  To improve the outflow of Lake Como\u2019s waters, new arches were added in the 14th and 15th centuries, bringing the bridge to its current length of <strong>131 metres<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An&nbsp;Icon&nbsp;between&nbsp;History and&nbsp;Modernity<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n  Over time, the bridge\u2019s charm has fuelled suggestive artistic theories, such as the one identifying it in the landscape behind Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s <strong><em>Mona Lisa<\/em><\/strong>.\n  Although it remains an unconfirmed hypothesis, it adds to the legendary aura of a monument that has survived centuries of battles.\n  Among the most dramatic events was the <strong>1799 conflict<\/strong>, when French troops blew up several arches to halt the Austro-Russian advance.\n  Today, following significant restoration and enhancement work and enriched by modern lighting, the &#8220;Ponte Vecchio&#8221; offers a unique panoramic walk between Monte Barro and the city skyline.\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Azzone Visconti Bridge, affectionately known by the people of Lecco as &#8220;Ponte Vecchio&#8221; (Old Bridge), is a landmark monument marking the exact point where Lake Como ends and the River Adda resumes its course.
