{"id":3366,"date":"2024-04-11T12:15:53","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T10:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/?p=3366"},"modified":"2024-06-04T16:30:25","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T14:30:25","slug":"bell-tower-of-san-nicolo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/bell-tower-of-san-nicolo\/","title":{"rendered":"Bell Tower of San Nicol\u00f2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dubbed the &#8216;<strong>Matitone<\/strong>&#8216; by locals (literally \u2018big pencil\u2019), the <strong>bell tower of San Nicol\u00f2<\/strong> was built after the construction of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/basilica-of-san-nicolo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Basilica<\/a><\/strong>, using a tower of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/vallo-delle-mura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ancient city walls<\/a><\/strong> as its foundation. It still dominates the landscape of the city with its neo-Gothic spire, which resembles a <strong>pencil soaring into the sky.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <strong>96 metres<\/strong> tall, the bell tower of San Nicol\u00f2 is one of the <strong>highest in Europe<\/strong> and offers a unique and stunning view of the town, the lake and the surrounding mountains. There are <strong>396 steps<\/strong> to the top but a <strong>breathtaking panorama<\/strong> rewards all the effort. At the top of the bell tower, visitors can enjoy the shimmering hues of Lake Como and the mountains that encircle the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction began in <strong>1882<\/strong>, under the guidance of the engineer Gattinoni. After a brief interruption in 1894 due to a lack of funds, the people of Lecco managed to <strong>raise the money<\/strong> required to complete the project in <strong>1903<\/strong>, when the cross was placed at the top.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, in 1904, the work was finally completed with the arrival of <strong>nine bells<\/strong>, each dedicated to a sacred figure.
