Located in the very heart of Lecco, in Piazza XX Settembre<\/strong>,<\/a> the Torre Viscontea<\/strong> represents one of the city’s most iconic symbols and the primary witness to Lecco’s transformation from a fortified town to a modern industrial city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last sentinel of Azzone Visconti\u2019s Castle <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n The Torre Viscontea is the only part of the majestic castle built by Azzone Visconti in the 14th century<\/strong> to have survived intact.\n At that time, the town of Lecco appeared as a triangular-shaped military stronghold, completely enclosed by defensive walls.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n In the 17th century, the structure became a pivotal point of territorial control, housing the permanent garrison of Spanish soldiers<\/strong> immortalised by Alessandro Manzoni in The Betrothed<\/em> (I Promessi Sposi<\/em>).\n Traces of this military past remain tangible on the ground floor of the tower, where the ancient guardhouse quarters and several stone cannonballs<\/strong> are still visible.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From prison to Exhibition Hub<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n The fate of the Torre Viscontea changed drastically in 1782<\/strong>, when the Austrian Emperor Joseph II decreed the abolition of the Lecco stronghold.\n While the walls and the castle were largely demolished to encourage urban development, the tower was spared.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Restored in 1816 by the famous architect Giuseppe Bovara<\/strong>, the tower was used as a prison before being definitively entrusted to the Municipality of Lecco in 1932.\n Today, the Torre Viscontea is part of the Si.M.U.L. (Lecco Urban Museum System)<\/strong> and has become a vibrant cultural hub dedicated to temporary art and history exhibitions.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
