Towering over the town of Vercurago<\/strong>, just 5 km from Lecco<\/strong>, the Innominato\u2019s Castle<\/strong> (historically known as the Rocca di Vercurago<\/strong>) is one of the region’s most iconic destinations. This fortified complex stands on the Tremasasso<\/strong>, a limestone height dramatically situated on the slopes of Mount Magnodeno<\/a><\/strong>, which descends towards Lake Garlate at this very point. From this strategic position, 180 metres above the lake<\/strong>, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views stretching from the eastern branch of Lake Como (the Lario) to the course of the River Adda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Symbol of the Manzonian Sites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The castle’s fame is inextricably linked to Alessandro Manzoni <\/strong>and his masterpiece, The Betrothed (<\/strong>I promessi sposi)<\/em><\/a>. Tradition identifies this stronghold as the residence of the powerful and tormented Innominato. Between the fortress and the inhabited village lie the ruins of the Cascina della Bicocca, believed to be the remains of the Malanotte, the tavern and guard post of the Bravi. Although the area is not currently accessible, the sight of these ruins nevertheless evokes the atmosphere of the novel, striking a evocative balance between historical reality and literary myth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith and History: Saint Jerome Emiliani<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond its Manzonian charm, the site is a significant spiritual centre linked to Saint Jerome Emiliani<\/strong>, founder of the Somascan Fathers.<\/strong> In the 16th century, the Saint used the fortress to house orphans; today, the main tower contains a chapel dedicated to him, marking the final point of the Sacro Monte di Somasca <\/strong>devotional route. The summit is dominated by a large iron cross <\/strong>(Crocione), erected in memory of the Saint and the Alpini soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Tips: The Path to the Fortress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The castle can be reached via an easy, scenic footpath, a walk of about 30 minutes starting from the Sanctuary of San Jerome<\/strong>. As this is a mountain route, the walk is suitable for those who are used to walking but is not recommended for people with reduced mobility or mobility difficulties, or for pushchairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ascent, you can admire the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs), built in 1837, or head towards the Hermitage (Eremo) via an evocative flight of steps carved directly into the rock. Although the fortification was partially destroyed in 1799, the surviving perimeter walls and bastions still bear witness to the strategic importance of this medieval outpost, which once served as a contested border between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
