Located in the so-called &#8220;Valle dell\u2019Oro&#8221; (Valley of Gold) within the municipality of <strong>Civate<\/strong>, this destination represents a perfect blend of the rugged beauty of the Lecco Prealps and the deep historical roots of the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Legend: Prince Adelchi\u2019s miracle and King Desiderio\u2019s vow<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The allure of San Pietro al Monte is deeply rooted in myth. Legend has it that in 772 AD, the last King of the Longobards, <strong>Desiderio<\/strong>, founded a monastery here as a sign of profound devotion and gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is said that his son, <strong>Prince Adelchi<\/strong>, was hunting in these woods when he was struck by a sudden and severe eye ailment (or, according to other versions, wounded while pursuing a white boar). His sight was miraculously restored after washing in a <strong>spring <\/strong>that bubbled from the ground at this very spot. Moved by the miracle, <strong>Desiderio <\/strong>decreed that a basilica dedicated to St Peter be built on that exact site. To this day, the spring mentioned in the legend continues to flow silently near the church, feeding the mystery of this place suspended in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque Art<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While its origins date back to the Longobard era\u2014as evidenced by the remains of towers and columns from the 5th to 8th centuries\u2014the complex we admire today is a triumph of <strong>11th-century Romanesque style<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site consists of three main buildings: the <strong>Basilica of San Pietro<\/strong>, the <strong>Oratory of San Benedetto<\/strong>, and the remains of the ancient monastery, which today stand as evocative ruins. At the entrance of the basilica, two stone portals greet visitors with the carved Benedictine motto &#8220;<strong>Ora et labora<\/strong>&#8221; (Pray and work), a reminder of the monks&#8217; centuries-long presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the eye is captured by a marvellous <strong>fresco cycle<\/strong> depicting the <strong>Vision of the Apocalypse.<\/strong> This masterpiece describes with extraordinary complexity the triumph of the Righteous and the battle between the Archangel Michael and the Dragon, offering a pictorial testimony of exceptional theological and artistic value. Not to be missed are the monumental ciborium, which mirrors the one in Milan\u2019s Sant\u2019Ambrogio, and the atmospheric crypt decorated with refined stuccos illustrating the life of the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hiking to San Pietro al Monte<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Abbey is <strong>accessible only on foot<\/strong>: to experience its beauty, one must walk a historical path that follows an ancient mule track of Longobard origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Departure<\/strong>: <strong>Civate <\/strong>(315m above sea level), where designated parking is available for visitors.<br><strong>The Trail<\/strong>: Take Trail No. 10 (E) from Civate (Pozzo area), a cobbled path that climbs through chestnut forests.<br><strong>Duration &amp; Difficulty<\/strong>: The hike is classified as easy but is consistently steep; it takes approximately one hour to cover the 300-metre elevation gain.<br><strong>Panorama<\/strong>: Upon reaching the grassy plateau, the view stretches across <strong>Lake Annone<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/monte-barro-park\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"3491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monte Barro<\/a><\/strong>, and the iconic profile of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/monte-resegone\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resegone<\/a><\/strong>. The surrounding meadows are ideal for a picnic or a short rest before continuing along Trail 10 towards the summit of Monte Cornizzolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To preserve and share this heritage, the <strong>Associazione Amici di San Pietro al Monte<\/strong>, founded by Don Vincenzo Gatti, has been active at the site since 1975.
