The highest peak in the Grigne <\/strong>group is the Northern Grigna<\/strong>, also known as Grignone<\/strong>, located between Lake Como<\/strong> and Valsassina <\/strong>in the province of Lecco. With an impressive elevation of 2,410 <\/strong>metres, it is an internationally-renowned destination for mountain lovers and offers trekking routes<\/strong> suitable for all, from experienced hikers to families with children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Featuring three distinct slopes,<\/strong> the Grigna presents a variety of extraordinary landscapes<\/strong>. The southwestern side, the steepest and most challenging for climbers, overlooks the eastern shore of Lake Como<\/strong>. The eastern side, facing Valsassina<\/strong>, is a gentler climb through woods.\u00a0 Finally, the northern face forms a vast glacial basin that extends towards the Cainallo Pass and the Esino Lario<\/strong> area, well- known for its numerous caves <\/strong>and abysses <\/strong>and a popular destination for potholers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speleologists <\/strong>are mainly drawn to the Grigna by its abysses<\/strong>, some of the deepest in Italy<\/strong>. The water flowing through these caves forms the River Fiumelatte<\/strong> eight kilometres away in Varenna<\/a>. This river was also studied by Leonardo da Vinci<\/strong>, who mentioned it in his Codex Atlanticus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit of the Grigna offers stunning views<\/strong>, from the Alps to the Bernese Oberland, from the Matterhorn to Mount Rosa and the mountain ranges in the Triveneto. On very clear days, Milan\u2019s Cathedral<\/strong> can be made out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An old legend <\/strong>is associated with the Grigne Group. It is the tale of an incredibly beautiful but cruel female warrior<\/strong>, who executed a knight<\/strong> who fell in love with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charmed by her beauty and unable to live without her, the knight <\/strong>went to her castle and declared his love<\/strong>. But the woman had been made heartless <\/strong>by years of warfare and ordered one of her sentinels to kill him.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legend has it that God punished the warrior by turning her into a mountain<\/strong>, the majestic Grignone<\/strong>, while the sentinel <\/strong>became Monte Grignetta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name “Grigna<\/strong>” is thought to have come from “grign\u00e0<\/strong>” meaning “to smirk<\/strong>” in the Lombard dialect, probably a reference to the many caves <\/strong>in the mountain group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
