Built in the <strong>thirteenth century<\/strong>, it was originally dedicated to Saint Calimerius and was the seat of the Disciplinati Brotherhood. The Lecco tradition of the \u201c<strong>michini<\/strong>&#8221; is owed to them: <strong>small yeast-free rolls<\/strong> that are handed out on <strong>29 July<\/strong> on the day dedicated to Saint Martha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The origins of the Church of Saint Martha date back to the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong> and it has been restored and extended several times over the centuries, reflecting the various historical eras and a series of architectural styles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The exterior <\/strong>of the Church of Saint Martha has a simple yet elegant fa\u00e7ade; crossing the threshold, the <strong>simple nave with barrel vault of 1615<\/strong> is immediately striking and creates a secluded and welcoming atmosphere. The walls are adorned with <strong>frescos<\/strong> and artworks that relate stories of faith and devotion. The decorations are in the <strong>baroque style<\/strong> and the statue of the \u201cMadonna of the Plague\u201d is also found here, a comfort for citizens during the epidemic of 1630, as well as a fresco of the Glory of Saint Martha in the presbytery&#8217;s vault.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chiesa di Santa Marta (Church of Saint Martha) lies in the heart of Lecco\u2019s historic centre.
