{"id":6543,"date":"2024-10-25T11:58:59","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T09:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/?p=6543"},"modified":"2024-10-25T11:59:01","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T09:59:01","slug":"square-and-monument-to-antonio-stoppani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leccotourism.it\/en\/square-and-monument-to-antonio-stoppani\/","title":{"rendered":"Square and monument to Antonio Stoppani"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Walking along the lakeside<\/strong> from the centre to the north, a square is reached dedicated to <strong>Antonio Stoppani<\/strong>, a renowned priest, patriot, geologist and man of letters who was born in Lecco on 15 August 1824, the remains of whom are preserved in a chapel in the city\u2019s Monumental Cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the centre of the <strong>red-brick semi-circular square<\/strong> lies the monument dedicated to him, abbot and geologist, the author of <em>Il bel Paese. <\/em>The bronze statue is the work of the Milan sculptor Michele Vedani, while the base was designed by the Lecco architect Mino Fiocchi; it faces the lake and portrays the geologist in a <strong>thoughtful<\/strong> pose with his right hand under his chin. The realism and expressivity with which the abbot is portrayed is vaguely reminiscent of the <strong>aesthetics of the artistic movement of the Scapigliatura, then current<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inauguration took place on <strong>25 September 1927<\/strong>, a day of great importance for the city: in the morning, the inauguration was held of the monument to <strong>Antonio Stoppani<\/strong> while, in the afternoon, it was the turn of <strong>Mario Cermenati,<\/strong> his greatest pupil and bearer of his legacy in the development of Italian geology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standing in front of Piazza Stoppani, on the pavement beyond the road, the <strong>two symbols of Lecco<\/strong> can be seen behind the monument: the <strong>Bell Tower of the<\/strong> <strong>Basilica di San Nicol\u00f2<\/strong> and <strong>Monte Resegone<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning away from Piazza Stoppani and facing the other way towards the lake, the <strong>Gilded Statue of San Nicol\u00f2 <\/strong>in the middle of the water can be admired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walking along the lakeside from the centre to the north, a square is reached dedicated to Antonio Stoppani, a renowned priest, patriot, geologist and man of letters who was born in Lecco on 15 August 1824, the remains of whom are preserved in a chapel in the city\u2019s Monumental Cemetery.
