A place where history, architecture and the charm of nature come together to create an unforgettable panorama: Villa Bertarelli in Galbiate is a must-see destination in the Lecco area. Situated in the historic Rizzolo district, along the road leading to Camporeso, this 18th-century residence is described as a ‘precious balcony’ due to its elevated position, which seems to embrace the full splendour of the Brianza lakes.

History and architecture: from 18th-century style to Portaluppi’s touch

The earliest records of the villa date back to the Teresian Land Register of 1721. Over the centuries, the property passed through the hands of distinguished families of the Milanese bourgeoisie, who chose it as their favourite holiday retreat. The famous poet Carlo Porta also stayed within the walls of this residence, as a guest of the Ballabio family in the early 19th century.

The villa’s current appearance is the result of a major restoration carried out between 1911 and 1913 by the architect Piero Portaluppi. Thanks to his work, Villa Bertarelli has taken on a charming neo-baroque style, still visible today in the floral frescoes framing the windows, the friezes beneath the eaves and the characteristic trefoil-shaped openings.

The Historic Gardens: a botanical and artistic masterpiece

The true jewel of the complex is its historic gardens, a system of terraces that slope gently down towards the valley. The park is divided into several areas of great beauty:

The Formal Garden: characterised by fountains, a nymphaeum and parterres decorated with elegant stone mosaics, inspired by Roman and late 18th-century styles.

The Orchard and Fruit Garden: the area in front of the main entrance, which retains its traditional agricultural layout with a splendid semi-circular gate designed by Giuseppe Bovara in 1816.

Architectural features amidst the greenery: the park is home to a charming historic greenhouse and a pergola, likely the work of engineer Carlo Santamaria, which add a touch of romantic elegance to a stroll through the grounds.

Villa Bertarelli today: headquarters of Monte Barro Park

Today, the Villa is owned by the Municipality of Galbiate and houses the headquarters of Monte Barro Park and the Native Flora Centre. It is a key destination for anyone wishing to explore the biodiversity and culture of this protected area, often described as a ‘green island amongst the lakes’.

Villa Bertarelli is not just a stop for art lovers, but an experience offering one of the most beautiful views in the province of Lecco.
