Monte Resegone
The iconic profile of the Orobie: where nature meets the pages of “The Betrothed”
Monte Barro, a Lecco outpost of the Lombard Prealp entirely contained within its namesake regional park, is an extraordinary nature reserve of European significance. Characterised by a limestone-dolomite relief rising to 922 metres, this mountain stands completely isolated from the surrounding peaks, dominating the landscape between the eastern branch of Lake Como and the lakes of Annone and Garlate. Thanks to this privileged position, the Park has been designated a “Site of Community Importance” or its inestimable value in preserving biodiversity.
The charm of Monte Barro lies primarily in its incredible floral richness: within an area of less than 700 hectares, over 1,000 plant species have been recorded—an exceptional concentration due to geological factors and events linked to the Pleistocene glaciations. For those wishing to explore this wealth, the Park hosts the Native Flora Centre (CFA), which works to safeguard local plant species.
The fauna also plays a leading role: the mountain’s strategic position makes it a vital corridor for numerous migratory species. This phenomenon is studied at the Costa Perla Ornithological Station, an ancient bird-snaring site cleverly converted into a scientific observatory for monitoring birdlife.
The Park’s cultural heritage is equally striking. Excavations have brought to light the Piani di Barra Archaeological Area, which houses a Gothic residential and military settlement (5th–6th century) that is unique in Italy. The findings are kept at the Barro Archaeological Museum (MAB), located in the heart of the Park.
The historical memory of the region continues in the mediaeval hamlet of Camporeso, home to the Ethnographic Museum of Upper Brianza (MEAB). This cultural centre offers a deep immersion into the traditions and lifestyles of local communities, making the Park an outstanding educational hub.
Exploring Monte Barro means following a network of easily accessible trails that reveal the many treasures guarded within the Park. Among the most significant routes are the Sentiero delle Torri (Tower Trail), leading through the mountain’s historical remains, and the classic ascent to the summit, which offers an iconic 360-degree panoramic view.
In addition to the pedestrian paths, the Park has designated specific routes for bicycles, ensuring a sustainable way to enjoy the area while respecting all visitors.
The Park’s institutional and cultural heart is divided between two main sites:
Villa Bertarelli: Located in Galbiate, this is the prestigious headquarters of the Park Authority. The villa is famous for its historic gardens, which terrace down towards the landscape, offering some of the most evocative views in the region.
The Eremo (Hermitage) of Monte Barro: Situated at an altitude of 750 metres, it serves as the visitor centre and hospitality hub. It is the base for those wishing to embark on numerous hiking trails, participate in educational activities, or simply pause to enjoy a panorama that stretches from Monte Resegone to the Grigne and across to the Po Valley.
Monte Barro stands as an essential destination for anyone seeking an authentic experience that combines outdoor sport with the discovery of a historical and natural heritage of international standing.
Park Authority Headquarters: Villa Bertarelli, Via Bertarelli 11, Galbiate (LC).
Getting to the Monte Barro Regional Park: We recommend arriving on foot or by public transport; a shuttle service operates on public holidays to reduce vehicular traffic and protect the environment.
