San Pietro al Monte
A Romanesque masterpiece suspended between the sky and the lake
The San Tomaso Plain, situated in the Valmadrera area at an altitude of 580 metres, is the ideal spot for anyone seeking a rejuvenating escape from the city, surrounded by nature. This splendid location is a tue panoramic terrace offering a breathtaking view that takes in the entire surrounding landscape and the beauty of the Lecco area in a single glance.
From the plain, you can admire a horizon dominated by the area’s most iconic peaks, amongst which the majestic Grignetta, San Martino, Monte Due Mani and the unmistakable silhouette of the Resegone stand out. The view stretches just as beautifully to the south, offering a special perspective on Lake Garlate, Lakes Annone and Pusiano, as your gaze follows the course of the River Adda until it is lost in the landscapes of the lower Brianza.
Considered one of the most picturesque spots in the area, the Piana di San Tomaso is the perfect destination for families with children and for those who enjoy gentle hikes. The path leading up from Valmadrera offers a pleasant and not overly demanding walk, allowing you to immerse yourself completely in the countryside and enjoy an authentic outdoor experience just a stone’s throw from built-up areas.
As well as its natural attractions, the village is home to cultural treasures of great value, such as the small church of San Tomaso. Built in 1838 and recently restored, the church houses a fine altarpiece depicting the Virgin Mary together with Saints Thomas and John of God.
Rounding off the cultural offering is the Agricultural Museum, opened in 2000 and managed by the Mountain Community. Inside, visitors can embark on a journey through time amongst period tools, equipment and machinery, whilst also exploring faithful reconstructions of the kitchen and bedroom typical of 19th-century farmhouses. Thanks to this blend of nature and history, San Tomaso remains a destination of excellence all year round.
