The iconic profile of the Orobie: where nature meets the pages of “The Betrothed”
If there is one mountain capable of defining the identity of a region, it is Monte Resegone (1,875 m). With its unmistakable ‘sawtooth’ profile overlooking Lecco and visible as far as the walls of Milan, the Serrada – as it was once known – is a dolomite giant that brings together literature, history and nature. Celebrated by Alessandro Manzoni in the opening lines of The Betrothed, Monte Resegone is not only a literary symbol but a true paradise for lovers of trekking and hiking.
From the gentle beech woods of the Regional Forest to the airy and technically challenging ridges, it offers routes for every level of experience, rewarding visitors at its summit (Punta Cermenati) with a view stretching from the Central Alps to the Monte Rosa range and the Po Valley.
The classic routes to the summit
For those wishing to touch the cross at Punta Cermenati and enjoy refreshments at the Azzoni Mountain Hut, the options vary considerably in terms of difficulty and views:
Route 1 from Lecco (Versasio)
This is the historic and most popular route. It starts from the Versasio cable car station and climbs the western slope, passing by the Stoppani Mountain Hut. It is a long and strenuous route requiring a good level of fitness, with some exposed sections and rocky passages towards the end.
Difficulty: EE – Experienced Hikers
Elevation gain: 1,265 m
Time: approx. 3 hours
From Morterone (East Slope)
This is the easiest and quickest route to the summit. Starting from Italy’s smallest municipality, the path winds through woods and pastures with steady but never excessive gradients, reaching the summit in around 2 hours with an elevation gain of approximately 800 m.

Nature and history: the Resegone Forest and the Piani d’Erna
Beyond its peaks, the Resegone harbours a green heart spanning 690 hectares, protected as a Regional Forest: a rich ecosystem where centuries-old beech trees, chamois, roe deer and even golden eagles coexist. These areas, part of a network of 20 forests managed by ERSAF on behalf of the Lombardy Region, form a unique mosaic of ecosystems. As well as safeguarding biodiversity, they are vital sites for environmental conservation, hiking and educational activities.
The Resegone Circular Walk: A 12-kilometre circuit that allows you to discover different habitats, from 19th-century lead mines to the ancient charcoal kilns (ajàl), where charcoal was once produced for Lecco’s industries.
The Great Trees Trail: Ideal for those seeking a nature walk from Morterone, this circular route allows you to admire majestic beech trees, true guardians of time.
Piani d’Erna and the Nature Hiking Trail: A veritable ‘terrace’ overlooking Lecco, these are easily accessible via the convenient cable car from Versasio. As well as being a starting point for more challenging trails, here you can follow the Nature Trail, ideal for families and for those seeking a relaxing day at altitude.
For experienced hikers: gullies and equipped ridges
The wildest side of the Resegone is revealed in the gullies that cut through its slopes and in the exposed ridges:
The Bobbio Gully (Trail 10)
A route for experienced hikers (EE) starting from Piani d’Erna. This trail is equipped with ropes and chains and climbs a steep, rocky gully; the use of a helmet is strongly recommended due to the risk of falling rocks.

Cresta della Giumenta
For those seeking a more exposed experience, the Cresta della Giumenta links the Passo del Fo’ (near the Capanna Alpinisti Monzesi) to Monte Magnodeno. This is a very picturesque equipped route, characterised by enjoyable ups and downs over rock and constant exposure, reserved for those who are not afraid of heights and have a sure footing.

Practical tips for your hike
The ideal time for hiking on the Resegone is from May to October, when the paths are free of snow. In winter, the mountain takes on a different character: the routes become terrain for experienced hikers equipped with crampons and the appropriate gear.
The trails range from Tourist (T) to Expert Hikers (EE): always check the technical information sheet before setting off. As with any mountain hike, it is essential to wear hiking boots with non-slip soles and to carry a supply of water, especially on sections exposed to the sun. Mountain huts such as the Azzoni, Capanna Monzesi, Stoppani and Marchett offer accommodation and traditional cuisine, but it is always advisable to check their seasonal opening times.
The cable car station in Lecco is served by bus route 5. If you’re travelling up from Morterone, bear in mind that the road is scenic but very winding.
